Lace Up
How does the new community walk model work?
In 2026, Lace Up is launching a community walk model, where 10–15 communities across Canada will host local walks organized by Community Champions.
Each walk brings together local participants who want to raise awareness and funds while supporting people living with diabetes in their community.
Is there a cost to become a community champion?
No. There is no cost, however, because of the time and resources required to organize a walk, Community Champions are asked to commit to a $10,000 fundraising goal for their event.
Is there a registration fee?
Yes, participants will be required to pay a small registration fee to cover the cost of finisher's medals and additional event incentives.
How many participants are expected at a community walk?
Community walks typically aim to bring together 80–100 walkers who will fundraise and participate in the event.
Will Diabetes Canada promote my walk?
Yes. Diabetes Canada will help promote Lace Up nationally and regionally, while Community Champions lead local engagement and fundraising in their community.
Where can I learn more about hosting a Lace Up walk?
For full details about hosting a walk, including roles, responsibilities, and planning guidance, please refer to the Community Champion Guide.
Is there a virtual Lace Up option?
Yes. While we encourage participants to join a local community walk or start a team, you can still participate virtually by creating a fundraising page and sharing it with your network.
If you are looking for a virtual-first fundraising experience with contests and incentives, we also encourage you to check out our Aprons in Action peer-to-peer fundraiser. Learn more at apronsinaction.ca
